Visual Merchandising for COW Nottingham

This week I was set a task alongside 9 other girls on my course to create a window display for a vintage store in Nottingham called COW. We weren't given much to go on apart from being told that it would be displayed over the valentines day period and given a sheet of paper that said 'Dinner for two and a shoe'.

Before the actual days of the project I did some extra research into the company itself to get further knowledge and a full understanding of what COW is all about, what kind of products they sell, and some previous window displays. I knew this would help me visualise what sort of thing I was going to create and ensure that created a window display that was relevant to the store.

To get us started as a team we thought of key words and associations for each thing this way we could slowly start generating ideas and put things together. We knew straight away we didn't want to use people for 'Dinner for two', it's boring and expected so we thought about shoes, being the given object, and how they make up a pair. One shoe could be a male and the other could be a female. At first we thought about the female being a heel and the male being a loafer then we stopped and thought that those shoes didn't represent COW. This lead our thought to decide on having a pair of trainers such as a pair of converse, this is a show that completely sums them up.

For the back we decided that we didn't want too much going on which meant we didn't want to create tables and plates and cups etc. so we thought about creating a massive menu so you could clearly see that it was a dinner for two without being so literal. The menu wouldn't be a typical menu, we thought about how the writing should be made out of laces and puns for the food choices such as 'Lace Bolognese' and 'Stiletto Sticks' as it makes it playful and fun like the store itself. This also related to the whole shoe concept making sure we were thinking about how the shoes and meal were relating to the store.
Our main colour scheme was red, gold and black this is because we were thinking about how its due to be set on valentines day so it sets the scene of romance, we decided we wanted our converse to be a pair of black and white high tops as these are classic vintage and we thought how the colours quite literally represent a cow.

Thinking about marketing strategies we thought about how we could get the customers engaged by them taking part in a quiz for example if they could guess all of the puns on the menu they would get a percentage off in store. Everyone loves a discount and getting involved when shopping as it makes the experience fun and interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this as VM is one of my interests in where I want my career to go when I finish University, so any experience is great especially when it's a popular store and has more than one in the country.
